Mai a fost plin cu experienți noi. Kareoake, Rocky Horror si mai mult kareoake :) Este timp sa evoluez. Acum locuiesc aici 18 luni si înca am continuat sa am teamă când vorband. (mai bine decât înainte dar...) Deci am trebuit sa iau masuri, puțin masuri. La kareoke (nu stiu cum sa spell asta) Ben si eu am cântat Meatloaf's - Paradise by the Dashboard Light si wooohoooo!!! noi am castigat un metre de tequila, un câştig bun si asta a ajutat încredere de sine dar cred ca i-a ucis unul după altul celule. asta dualitatea poate nu e bine pentru scopul meu.

Rocky Horror ce pot sa zic? A fost bun bun bun si noi luam acest spectacol pe drum - urmator spectacol e in Sibiu mai detaili mai tarziu...

Mai mare masuri sunt cu relație cu cursurile mele la universitatea. În aproape 2 saptamani va fi ziua de 'reckoning.' Pe 11 iunie voi veni în fața de fața cu profesorul meu (omul foarte destept) cu examene oral YIKES!!!

250 grame zahăr a/k/a moarte albă
1/4 linguriță sare
nucile sunt opționale

în oală mai mare topesti unt - dupa asta se pune în bol

în oală mai mica se pune pudra de cacao si se amestecă cu un pic de apa

clatesti oala mai mare si se pune apa (aproape 1/2) - se fierbe apa si se pune oala mică în cea mare pentru a se topi ciocolata

dupa asta se adaugă si bucăți de ciocolată

se adaugă ciocolata topită cu unt

se amestecă oua, vanilie, sare si zahar apoi făina, puțin câte puțin

se toarnă yummy goodness în tava cu hârtie pentru copt sau foie

se coace în cuptor - la foc mediu (mijloc în imagine foc :) aproape 180c - pentru 30-35 minute pîna când scobitoarea e curata si viola!!!

tradiție în românia e foarte bogată! mi-am adus aminte de timp când eram fetița. Beth, Kim, Vicki, Kate si eu plecam împrejur orasul si colindeaza. ieri copiii vecine veniră acasă mea si cântară. mai tarziu scâri în blocul meu erau plin cu voci plăcuți. stauam linistit acasa pentru mai mult de ziua, doar sa mergeam afară un pic timp să visitez pisicuța la apartamentul lui Ben. Bineinteles mâncam prea mult prajitori....Eu trebuie opri asta :) cred ca pot intoi ianuarie!

Tradition in romania is very rich! i remember when i was a young girl. Beth, Kim, Vicki, Kate and I went around the town and sang christmas carols. yesterday neighborhood children came to my home and sang. later the stairwell in my building was filled with sweet voices. I stayed home most of the day, only to go out for a short time to visit 'pisicuța' (kitty) at Ben's apartment. Of course, I ate too many sweets....I must stop this :) think that I can 1st of january!

ieri a fost ziua naționala sau Ziua Unirii, care celebrează unificare de provincie cu regat de românia (1918.) în fiecare an e celebrează pe 1 decembrie si în acest an a fost pe vineri - wooohooo - a fost o ziua mare pt transilvania si alte regiune. în oras a fost plin cu energie, fericire - sentiment bun! din balconul meu am vazut 'fireworks' mare - foarte frumos - am incercat sa fotografiat etalare si am facut dar nu e foarte bune si baterie a murit în proces...deci 'post' e fara poze....

HOTNEWS.RO - US soldiers beat two Romanians, cannot be investigated

Two US soldiers have beaten the owner of a bar and a friend of his in Bistrita, Northern Romania. Both victims needed hospital care, but an official investigation could not be launched against the two attackers.

The pub scandal started when the US soldiers were told to take care with their cigarettes. The two beat the owner of the bar and smashed a bottle in the head of his friend. The barman managed to pull the alarm and called the police.

But the police failed to take any measure against the two as they benefited of immunity and could only answer before the American law, as Romania has signed a deal with the US in this regard.

The US troops were in Bistrita for joint military exercises with Romanian soldiers. The US Embassy to Bucharest told public TV station TVR the two had been withdrawn to a base in Germany and would face an inquiry.

"THE road to Miklosvar seems almost designed to keep visitors away. Anyone hoping to make their way to this village deep in the center of Romania must brave potholes and gravel that pummel the bones of passengers in even the most luxurious of vehicles.

The reward for enduring the three- to four-hour trip from Bucharest is a part of Transylvania that appears to have changed little over the last century. Farmhouses, adorned with outsized, ornate wooden gateways, hug cobblestone and dirt roads. In nearby fields, men and women cut hay with scythes. Traffic, for the want of a better word, consists of horses and carts passing by once in a while.

For most people though, the idea of Transylvania conjures images of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” and by all appearances, Miklosvar seems well qualified as an appropriate backdrop. While Bran Castle, the towering fortress most closely associated with Vlad the Impaler, is 41 miles away, Miklosvar offers a deserted manor cum castle, bats that fly through the unlit streets at night and even a charming count who speaks in faintly accented English.

But these are not the reasons why the said count, the man responsible for bringing most outsiders there, would have you visit.

For the last decade, Count Tibor Kalnoky, a former veterinarian and ornithologist, has been working to turn this village on the eastern edge of Transylvania — the Hungarian-speaking region in central Romania — as well as the surrounding woodland into an environmental retreat and a preserve of the region’s architectural heritage.

Descendants of the feudal overlords of the area, whose roots there date back as far as 1252, Count Kalnoky and his family run a company that provides tours and accommodations for up to 20 guests in four farmhouses in Miklosvar. The money raised from Count Kalnoky’s Estate, as his company is known, goes toward restoring the humble steep-roofed buildings in the village as well as two of the family’s ancestral homes (one in Miklosvar and another nearby).

The company is also committed to promoting and protecting the local wildlife. It is lobbying for the woodland behind the village, home to such rare birds as the lesser spotted eagle, black storks and white-backed woodpeckers, to be protected under Romanian and European law.

Guests stay in one of four farmhouses, all of which have been restored over the last decade.

The 19th-century main guesthouse, or Upper House, has two stories and a cellar. Drinks are served in a drawing room with high-backed armchairs and a table covered in embroidered white cloth. At one end of the room stands a fireplace with a band of blue and white tiles that bear the Kalnoky crest. Meals are served in the cellar on a long wooden table in front of an open fire.

Another guesthouse, formerly a serf’s dwelling, is up a path. It is a much simpler affair, painted in light blue (the color of houses belonging to serfs or bonded workers) and with wooden gutters that hang from the roof.

The two other guesthouses are a five-minute walk away and face each other across an enclosed yard.

The family’s former hunting manor, which combines Renaissance, Baroque and neo-Classical architecture, is the most ambitious restoration project, and lies empty at the northern end of the village in its own park. During Communist times, it was used as the village’s main meeting hall and fell into neglect. Now it is open to visitors as the Kalnokys restore the stonework and frescoes on the outside walls.

While many villages in this region share this heritage, what makes Miklosvar different is that it has retained much of its original population. The villagers still make their livings almost exclusively from the land. Visitors can set out to track bears or wolves, visit bat-filled caves, walk through primeval forests and return each evening to the comfort of farmhouses with open fires and antique furniture, and eat rich local dishes like goulash with caraway seeds and sour cream.

Nearby there are numerous castles, former manors and fortified medieval churches to visit as well as crumbling Saxon villages, home to members of Romania’s ethnic German minority for 800 years until nearly all emigrated to Germany after the collapse of Communism. The beauty of this area and the Kalnokys’ restoration work have attracted interest from both architecture and wildlife enthusiasts, including Prince Charles, who is involved in a similar environmental and restoration program in Viscri, a nearby Saxon village.

The creation of Miklosvar as a rural retreat began some 19 years ago, when Count Kalnoky, the second son of a Hungarian aristocrat exiled to France, was just 21 and Romania was still under the grip of the Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

The count’s family fled Romania on the eve of the Second World War, and subsequently saw all their property seized by the Communists when they came to power at the war’s end. In 1987, about two years before the collapse of Communism, Count Kalnoky and his father made an illicit visit to their family’s former home, a U-shaped 19th-century manor house built around a courtyard, in Korospatak, a village close to Miklosvar. When they came out of the house, a huge crowd had gathered to greet them in the courtyard.

“People were crying and embracing my father,” Count Kalnoky said.

The crowd disappeared as quickly as it gathered though, as word came that members of Ceausescu’s much-feared Securitate, the secret police, were making their way to the village. As aristocrats and foreigners traveling in a country where foreign tourism was virtually forbidden, there was a risk that they could be accused of spying or trying to foment unrest. They made a hasty departure down a back road.

That, said the count, was “the trigger moment,” when he decided to dedicate himself to taking back his ancestral home.

The collapse of the Berlin Wall a year later and a revolution in Romania paved the way for people to reclaim property seized by the state. By 1997, Count Kalnoky had regained Korospatak, the former family home. He then started building up neighboring Miklosvar.

“It’s my answer to globalization, if you like,” said Count Kalnoky, 39.

“It was as if it was thrown into a deep freeze,” he said of the Miklosvar area when he found it, and that’s the way he would like to keep it.

IN late May, a short trip on top of a hay cart drawn by two horses brought the count and two guests to the woods overlooking the village. Over the next two hours, our guide, Gabor Tompos, led us on foot through thick grass to a burrow dug out by bears for hibernation. The paths were littered with wild orchids. Overhead, we spotted a large eagle’s nest in a birch tree.

Back in one of the guesthouses, we sank into armchairs, surrounded by antique oak, walnut and pine furniture, the kinds of items the family says would until recently have either been thrown away or used as firewood. Heavy eiderdown-filled bedcovers, crisp white sheets and traditional wool-filled mattresses would ensure a deep sleep that night.

Just as Miklosvar has remained largely unscathed by modern progress, it has also remained poor. Even while urban areas in Romania experience sharp growth as it prepares to join the European Union in next January, the accompanying wealth eludes many rural areas. And so Kalnoky appears to have given at least some in the village a renewed sense of pride and purpose as foreigners flock there.

But there is an odd feeling, too, of a hint of a return to a feudal order. Villagers refer to the Western-educated veterinarian as “the count” (guests usually call him Tibor). The kitchen staff and housemaids wear traditional dress, and linguistic barriers mean there is little communication between the visitors and the employees or villagers.

Miklos Cserei, who runs a small bar just near the Kalnokys’ main farmhouse where the walls were decorated with a fading Cindy Crawford calendar and a poster of J. R. from “Dallas,” remembers the apprehension of many villagers when the count won his property back.

“I think the older people were afraid,” Mr. Cserei said. “They could still remember stories when people here were peasants who worked for the count.” He said that some of those fears subsided when the count gave gift packages to the elderly at Christmas, a tradition he has kept up ever since.

Yet, in some ways, even Count Kalnoky himself sees his family fulfilling the role their ancestors did before them.

“The real value of aristocracy is something I’d like to deepen here,” he said. “A sense of responsibility toward the place and people here.”

VISITOR INFORMATION

The most direct way to Miklosvar is to fly to Bucharest and drive, or be picked up at the airport by Count Kalnoky’s staff (70 euros each way). From New York, several airlines fly to Bucharest with stops in various European cities; a recent Web search found fares for the middle of September starting at about $850 on Alitalia.

There are also regular trains between Bucharest and Brasov, where the Kalnoky staff will also meet visitors (for 15 euros).

While accommodations are comfortable, be prepared for outdoor living. A raincoat, sweater and outdoor shoes are essential. The castle is open year round, so a winter holiday — in thick snow — is a possibility. (The carts are replaced by sledges, but still pulled by horses.)

There is nowhere else to eat nearby, unless you want to make the 30-minute drive south to Brasov, so it is probably best to opt for the weeklong package offered by Count Kalnoky’s Estate (40-742202-586, www.transylvaniancastle.com) for 640 euros, $832 at $1.20 to the euor. It includes tours, activities and full board with wine.

There is plenty to do in the village itself. Depending on the season, visitors can try their hand at a range of activities including milking a cow, plowing fields with a horse, baking bread and even being a blacksmith.

Sighisoara and Brasov, the two main cities in the region, are both rich in medieval and Renaissance architecture. There are also numerous Saxon and Sekler (a Hungarian subculture) villages to explore. Viscri and Saschiz are Unesco World Heritage Sites, each with a fortified church and other medieval structures."

Sibiu was really an incredibly beautiful city and we had the good fortune to bask in the sun at a cafe after coming down from the mountains where it was FRIG! only 1.5 c and snow....we headed down the mountain and arrived in Sibiu where it was probably 26 or 27 c - much better :) in the evening we went an underground cafe that was calling us where there was a poetry reading going on....almost read my first romanian poem :) entitled "Unde?" so now a couple of pix of the brighter side of Sibiu...

Sibiu - designated as the European Capital for 2007 - they're working really really really hard to get the city ready and as i understand it a lot has been done already but now still they are working on the statie de tren..... there they have port-o-potties but the 1st was locked with some wire and the second was just too repulsive....what was i thinking that the WC would be mai bine hahahahahah - so now i share some pictures taken by mihai because he was the only crazy person to actually photograph it :) also included is a picture of cristina as we exit the potty - astounded is the best word to describe the experience - so my cons and my pants stunk after this experience and soaked for 24 hours .... woohooo the smell is gone :) i promise the next post will have pretty pictures of sibiu.....

in state este 'independence day' - aici nu conteaza. dar am avut o petrecere pe sambata. a fost foarte buna! prietenii mei au lucrat grau. am avut ajutor mult!!!! multumesc frumos! cristina - femeie domestica (binenteles deştepa si frumoasa) a facut foarte multe mancare si a fost o aparata de spalat de bucatarie. bogdan si stefan - barbatii puternici :) au transportat beri, scaune si un alt masă. fratele meu mai mica - mihai - a fost sclavul meu - cuiva face cumparator si a transportat multe mancare din piata cu mine. nimrod a fost bbq maestro si mai tarziu cu heidi au cantat si cantat chitare - foarte minunat. cosmin a adus radio/speakers sa foleseasca cu calculator - fara asta ambience nu ar vrea sa fi ca si ar putea sa fi ......multe ajutor sa fac asta petrecere reusita!!!

well life's a funny thing. filled with lots of good things and lots of joy. of course it's also filled with sadness sometimes. so today was one of sadness and i honor my mother who has passed away. she died in her sleep as night was passing into day - from friday to saturday. my heart is sad but it isn't broken because it's filled with gratitude for having her as a mother for all these years.

Easter a/k/a Paste

paste or easter is obviously celebrated at different times in differing cristian faiths all over the world - although there are not as many orthodox churches in the states (they do exist) - the date is calculated based on two different calendars....all as to do then with spring equinox and an important component is the cycles of the moon and a huge factor is that easter must fall on a sunday - which is a 19 year cycle and the lunar cycle each month is precisely 29.53059 days - new waxing to full and waning. plus the cal year gets all screwed up because a year is esentially 365.2422. (by the way it's interesting to note that march 1st is a big day here - called 1st day of spring even without the equinox - julian cal start - a nice convention for the problems with calendars days not really adding up and the variation of dates with leap year - is to use march 1st as the beginning of the calendar) so easter is calculated with an algorithm (cu Julian Calendar) - prior to 1582 easter was celebrated on the same date by all cristian faiths. a bunch of religious peeps gathered together ultimately sep. east and west and swapped calendars politics and yeah the pope - there was even some attempt to get back on the same cycle but it ain't gonna happen. and in fact easter back, way back in the day was not always celebrated on a sunday.....so now it is and yesterday was easter here and today is easter monday - another holiday. think that easter is on 2 sep sundays works well here in matters of convenience since then some places actually remain open or open late in the day again.

so all of these matters aside of calculating days - here we are with the most important celebration in the cristian faith since with out the resurrection there wouldn't be cristianity at all. (and of course there is a lot of controversy about jesus even existing - but that's not today's subject) the church incorporated the 'pagan' traditions of spring and wrapped it all up into one big celebration. bunnies, eggs, flowers - fertility, new life, etc. some with deeper meaning....so now to the celebration - from thursday church bells stop ringing until saturday - ringing again in the morning of easter sunday. lots of people go to church just before midnight on saturday night, where the priest comes out to give a blessing, distribute holy bread and provide the flame from which everyone will light their candles. gotta say i remember as a child how delicious the 'holy' bread and wine tasted - little cubes of heaven with delicious wine. i didn't actually go to this celebration here this year but as a child we would bring a basket with a bunch of stuff - traditional easter bread, salt, butter (my sister used to sculpt it into a little lamb,) horseradish, egg, some fresh mild sweetened cheese - maybe something else but that is all that i remember. in the dark of the night candles would be lit - flame passed. anyway, next year i'll check it out.

on easter when everyone would descend upon my bunica's house - each person entering would say christ is risen (reason- oops had to correct that freudian slip maybe) and you would reply he is risen indeed. this is the same here but it is said instead when you hit eggs together to 'rupt' the shell - the shell is put aside and kept until the next day when it can discarded. in ro you say -

another symbolism for the egg which has 3 parts, i learned yesterday, is the trinity. so following all of this in the afternoon i went to my first romanian easter celebration - it was awesome. where i got to 'rupt' my egg and stumble on my romanian words. i have to say it was probably the best easter i've experienced in years. hortenzia was the host and the attendees were her mom and two women who are very special to her and her mom and of course moi. so we did shots of tuica and some other stuff can't remember the name, drank homemade wine from a monestary and ate yummy foods - don't know all the names of them but ciorba, salata, lamb, pui and sarmale was served - f'ng fantastic! cause tenzie is a gourmet cook and the table and decor was perfect - i listened to wise women tell stories and fun was had by all. forte bine!!!!! bun! bun! bun! so next are some easter terms in ro and english for those who want to know....f'ng awesome that's all i can say - the evening closed when i met up with chris to pass on a 'care package' from tenzie of yummy foods for her since she had to work yesterday. we hung out in front of the orthodox church gabbing and then i strolled home watching the day change into night - gotta say it was one of the most beautiful days in my life.

oh how i long to write so early in the morning in ro and sometimes i do but today a little headache - maybe sugar overload from yesterday sampling the baked goods that i made for Paşte (Easter)....while i'm not a big religious girl in fact borderline atheist who wavers back and forth - more of a fan of science to hold my beliefs together ....i digress again. ok but i love tradition!!!! tradition (sing it! you know that tune from fiddler on the roof) love that musical too and played a character in the play in scola....again i digress.

back to tradition - bunica and mama mea si copilor - yep we used to make yummy goodies that you couldn't buy in the store in the states - namely nut and poppy seed rolls (which you can buy anytime of the year here and damn they're good - and i might say eating them regularly has not made them any less delicious) we would make these yummy goodies for easter and xmas along with lots and lots of other delicious things. the recipe is called 2 hour nut roll - hahahah - yeah right .

ok so i made them yesterday - this is also the first time i have baked since i've been here. so that means i didn't have all the luxuries of my past life - such as a blender and/or a good old fashioned bolt it to the table meat grinder (which by the way i used to have and NEVER ground meat in it) the meat grinder was only to grind the nuts for these tasty treats. i still need a blender but not for this recipe, that's for another recipe and frozen margaritas. also other obstacles here like my beautiful thermal baking pans that i shipped here because damn they're fabulous - well they don't fit in my cuptor :( this i knew though since i unpacked that box (deterent to previous baking desires) and yes that's right i can only bake one tray of whatever at a time in my cuptor. well cuptorile nu au temp gauges either. so it's guess how hot i am and try to bake - there is only a little picture - well 3 to be exact 1. light me, 2. low flame, 3. high flame. so luckily i guessed correctly based on my other intermitent oven adventures....

ahhh m-am intors acasa....sunt frustrat cu procesul de învațare (nu stiu i mean learning) ok since i started this post in engleza i will complete it in english...

so i chopped and i chopped and i chopped some more until nuca were pretty much aok - mix cu some cream si zahar and voila. mic a/k/a poppy seeds needed to be cooked for a few minutes with some other stuff but i didn't do that - got a bad recipe for that -in the states used to buy them prepared for baking. so they're not as tasty. but ok - problemo with this even if they are prepared - when u eat them they get stuck in ur teeth - VERY attractive look i might add. i made the dough and what the hell i was already a baking maniac chained to the cuptor for the day so i made cookies too and that's what i needed the blender for to make the oatmeal a flour like consistency...so instead i used them whole and they taste mighty good. of course i'm pufoasa (a little fat around the waist from winter) so the intention is to give all of these tasty treats away with a few cookies and a piece or 2 of nut/poppy seed roll.

so for the good of the world i now give u buni's recipe....

ingredients

dough - u'll need a rolling pin for this stuff
1 kg/1000 gr faine - flour
200 gr unt - butter (make sure it's soft)
1 tsp sare - salt
3 tbsp zahar - sugar
2 pachete drojdie uscata - dry yeast
100-125 ml lapte cald- about 1/4 cup milk (warm)
3 oua amestecat- eggs mixed
300 gr smântână - 1 cup sour cream

how to...
dissolve yeast in warm milk
mix butter with sugar and eggs then add salt and flour to the mixture. slowly add sour cream. add yeast mixture (it should have bubbled up a little) blend - knead until this mixture 'leaves the side of the bowl'

seperate - roll out dough - thin - spread with filling - roll up and place on greased baking pan seam side down - let them rise for 1 hour then bake @350F or low icon on cuptors in ro for 35-40 minutes.

filling - nucă
a bunch of walnuts - 1 kg probabil - grind them best in one of those old fashioned metal meat grinders
smântână or cream
zahar, sugar

mix ingredients for nuca filling by sight and don't forget to sample the mixture as you go along

filling mic - poppy (the correct way to make it)
200 gr mic - poppy seed don't know the conversion cause they sell it here in 100 gr pks
100 gr smăntănâ/cream 1/3 cup
100 ml miere - honey
1/2 tsp grated fresh lemon rind - nu stiu cum spui 'rind' în romaneste

optional to grind poppy seeds in food processor or spice grinder. either way you must combine with the milk and honey and cook over low heat until thick. stir in the lemon rind. set aside to cool. oh and by the way lots of peeps like raisins and well you can add some to the filling but frankly they remind of little bugs when cooked in stuff so i say don't do it. lovely alone but in stuff - yuck.

eat when warm to produce a mild but fabulous tummy ache :)

some people wonder and ask why? think that's from a famous kennedy quote something like that anyway but i was thinking of these words because one of my friends here doesn't quite get it. so in my groggy haze i decided to write some of my reasons while drinking coffee - yeah and also i'm into the whole 'you create your own reality thing' in general and find lists are helpful tools to create your reality.

I. creative inspiration comes easier here for me. it just did all on it's own. i paint and draw a lot here and have lots of creative ideas.

II. i love old world tradition blended with high tech. while surfing the net i hear the rooster crow and the horse hoffs pounding on the pavement nearby. by the way technology is cheaper here too .....unlike SUA cand prietenii suna, doar ei platesc....bieniteles este invers cand eu sun apoi doar eu platesc...foarte bun!!!!!

III. love the closeness of families here. ce pot sa spun despre asta? este evident!

IV. love the fun traditions like the days to celebrate spring and women and more

march 1 and 8. the first is considered the first day of spring and small gifts of flowers or little charm like things are given. the 8th celebrates femeie kinda like valentines day. other nifty traditions - when a couple is married, the groom's friends steal the bride for an hour or so and bring her to a cafe to rest if even for only a little while. - in decembrie the feast of st nick children put out there shoes all polished and nice where they can receive either a switch to be beaten with if your a bad girl or boy or maybe u'll get a little present like these kind of candy cane looking thingys. hmmmm my favorite thing is coming up where young men wander the streets and spray femeie with parfum if they like them...oh yeah and well it's near easter here - this sunday and next depending on wether or not u follow the pope....

V. bani - i wanted to live in an affordable city and now i do. i love the city life - prefer asta - BA DA - nu îmi place the country life. so, since i grew up in the ny metro area well probably with few exceptions - any city would outside of the area would be more affordable. but here even though real estate prices are going crazy because of the impending entry into the eu and the autostrada coming that will run through the entire country - my rent here is considered VERY expensive for the city BUT it is still 1/3 of what i paid in SUA and YES my apartment there was considered a very affordable good deal. now that i am here, i will move to an even more affordable apt when my lease is up saving even more money. cause if u live here well u make a romanian salary which is less then an american salary that is if u work for someone else....dar anything is possible here.

VI. spirituality is evident here. 'nuff said.

oops in my previous entry concerning immigration - i rambled a little and failed to mention the native americans and referred to americans as blue bloods - woops! well i can say though that part of my emotions concerning this issue are stirred by continually reading random quotes by people like Brit Hume among others and their blatant disregard for humanity. here's a little excerpt from a NY Times article on the immigration rallies....

another quote i read the other day was from a guy whose parents were immigrants from poland and he's first generation i think american - maybe even born in poland and came here as a child - really can't remember exactly but he said something like - 'immigrants are a real problem, we have to do something about them.'

ire and anger is what gets sparked in me when i hear these random statements...back it up - say something - say anything - pretend you have a logical reason to make this statement - what is your reasoning?

when i attended the university i took a class called the 'american experience' this was b4 there was a PBS series with the same title. the class was mandatory for all students regardless of their major. most of the students in my class as i recall were born in the states and were american citizens and most had either parents or grandparents who immigrated to the USA a few were immigrants themselves. we talked about what it means to be an 'american,' read and analyzed 10 non-fiction novels and wrote papers, etc. the thing that i discovered in this class was my lack of cultural community - as a child i experienced this sense of culture and community when visiting my grandparents at easter and in the summer, but after my grandparents were gone so was my sense of family and belonging - we were no longer bound to this community. we lived several hundred miles away from our last link to the immigrant community and i didn't identify with mass consumerism, baseball, apple pies and chevorlet - yeah i played sports as a kid and having an older brother i played baseball - it was fun - but i didn't like apple pie and well didn't drive a chevy - i digress again :)

what is it to be american? it's likely that if you are an 'american' you are an immigrant or the descendent of one who left their culture and life behind to follow some kind of dream of freedom, maybe to escape an unjust government or some other injustice in their country. hoping for a better life. all in the name of freedom. now much of the world is 'free' and this isn't such a big issue now for many. besides if you're there are you really free? i'm not sure that anyone is free in the USA anyway anymore. in fact, i think they have less freedoms now then ever before. in the name of security and the market economy - there is no longer a level of privacy granted to it's citizens. if you want to be a real american - invest in the stock market in iris scanning technology, tracking chips, etc. any kind of technology that will track you, your purchases and your actions - invest - you'll make a mint.

who am i? when people would ask me what nationality are you i would answer 'i'm american' - almost all of the time this answer was negated - 'no' they would say - 'where is your family from?' - 'ohhhhhh you mean what is my family heritage? i'm a mutt' - diluted european with bunici who were from 3 european countries. this question was asked by my peers and colleagues to form some kind of bond i think - maybe i was one of their clan? well i wasn't part of clan. usually in fact i didn't know anyone with my common heritage in my hoody. so maybe that's why i came back to a part of the world near to my ancestors? here when someone asks me my nationality i say just what i am - 'sunt americanca'

my feelings are intensly overwhelming when it comes to this issue and frankly i'm not sure i can put my emotions aside and write something reasonable....the first reasonable question i can ask is... 'what the fuck?' all of my grandparents were immigrants and now i'm an immigrant to another country... don't think they would've left hadn't it been for war and strife - almost too bad they did leave really. how many people are blue bloods in the US really now....how many?

oh the easy way - some of the half assed comments i read recently about this issue try to focus america's problems on the immigrant population....of course - blame the immigrants for fundamental structural problems with education, crime, poverty, the economy - mass waste consumerism where the population produces the most pollution, uses more resources then is ultimately sustainable...where the US will start wars to protect their interest in petroleum production...okey i'm getting too emotional so i'll just shut up for now and post some links....

Immigration rallies sweep US

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Thousands of people wearing white and waving American flags poured into the streets of Atlanta on Monday demanding dignity and rights for millions of illegal immigrants in the United States.

Shouts of "Si se puede!," Spanish for "Yes, we can!" reverberated through the wave of protesters stirred to action by legislation that would turn them into felons and fence off the U.S. border with Mexico.

Among a sea of white T-shirts, some read "We are not criminals." Banners declared "We have a dream," echoing civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

Sweeping across the country from California to Maine, the protests, vigils and marches have snowballed into one of the biggest Hispanic movements since the 1960s when farm workers united under Cesar Chavez.

The demonstrations arrive at the doorstep of the U.S. Congress later on Monday when more than 100,000 are expected to gather in the shadow of Capitol Hill where lawmakers have been unable to agree on legislation giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

In New York, organizers are expecting 15,000 to 20,000 for a "We are America" rally at City Hall. In Phoenix, the estimate is about 100,000. In Portland, Maine, a state where Hispanics make up less than 1 percent of the population, advocates were hoping for several hundred.

"We're all coming together," said Hector Yturralde, president of the Arizona Hispanic Community Forum. "We have one main cause. As you can see, it is a powerful one."

Events were planned for 94 cities and towns across the United States. Groups are also planning work walkouts, product boycotts and other measures. Some will target lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, the Tennessee Republican who has supported measures that emphasize law enforcement over citizenship.

Congress went home last week for a two-week break gridlocked on a compromise plan to reform immigration law and give millions of illegal immigrants a shot at citizenship.

Failure to push through a Senate bill, which would create a temporary worker program as proposed by President George W. Bush -- but opposed by many in his own Republican Party -- could derail major changes in immigration laws for this year.

The immigration debate has been complicated by November's congressional elections in which Democrats are threatening to seize control of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Republicans are split. The party is nervous about losing Hispanic votes that Bush and his political team have worked hard to recruit but also skittish about being seen as soft on border control and security.

Many conservatives worry that allowing millions of undocumented, mostly Mexican immigrants to qualify for residency would lead to charges of having voted for amnesty.

After a failed test vote in the Senate last week, the bill's main backers, Arizona Republican John McCain and Massachusetts Democrat Edward Kennedy, vowed not to give up.

"I think we'll get an immigration law," Kennedy told Reuters in an interview shortly before he was to address one of dozens of large protests nationwide. "The issue is not going away."

Any Senate bill would have to be merged with a much more stringent House bill that lacks a guest-worker program, defines all of an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants as felons, erect a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border and punish Americans who try to help undocumented workers.

"I think (House) Republicans touched a very raw nerve," Kennedy said. "It (the bill) touched the heart and soul of so many of these individuals ... enhancing their sense of fear and uncertainty."

Bush called the huge demonstrations a sign of the issue's importance.

"I think we need to understand that we're a nation of immigrants," he said in response to questions after a speech in Washington.

The protests were greeted with dismay by critics who said the U.S. government should not encourage "a culture where America's laws are optional."

"These are immigrants who are here illegally," said Susan Wysoki, spokeswoman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform. "They are demanding that they be given rights U.S. citizens have when their first act was to break the law by coming into this country illegally."

scratch and sniff - don't do it :) although this would be the best way to sum up the WC experience in timisoara - which we'll lead into this poveste now....

it was a long day of getting ready and studying limba româna. no nap for me :( but the excitement was high. our train left cluj at 22:25 in the evening and our train arrived in timisoara just before 5 am. approx 2.5 hrs of sleep. don't mind little sleep - in fact - love the night. adventure was certain and began while we waited on the platform for the train. our first site on this trip was the barbat jerking off on the train next to us on the platform. well well well - what can i say about that? we both noticed him at the same moment and looked at each other and burst into laughter. turning away wondering what would happen next? our train arrived and we found our seats and the whistles announded our departure...a sign to get settled for the long journey ahead.

settling in with no one else in our wagon we yammered on about everything. armed with our apa minerale, bananas and chocolate...there are many stops on the train and after a few stops an older woman joined us - she was probably 75 years old (not really sure because i can never tell how old anyone really is at all) after a while the guy who checks the tickets came by to check and bătrână did not have all of the proper papers as a pensioner and did not have any money to pay. her fate was to be put off the train at the next stop in the rain in the middle of the night after a 5 minute ordeal of the om demanding more information which she couldn't produce or money to pay the fare. so they left the car to continue the conversation. while she was put near the exit to wait for the next stop, we found him and along with another romanian woman on the train we paid her fair and she was allowed to return to our car. she didn't know that we paid for her. so that made it even more beautiful to see her smiling face as she showed us her ticket. her smile was like an angel glowing a halo of luminos light. she no longer showed her years only her inner beauty which streamed out of her. (by the way almost don't like mentioning our deed because it is not boasting but part of the story of the journey....so that said we continued on) she would reach her destination safe and sound. we were happy too knowing that she would be warm and could sleep peacefully in the car with us...we continued on until we arrived in timisoara around 5 am.

so what is worse the toilet on the train? or the WC in the station? lack of sleep makes either choice easier certainly. damn i had to go and so did chris. lugging our baggage, we headed toward the acrid smell. well it was as if we had arrived at the entrance of a carnival when we walked to the WC - a glass booth with turnstiles on either side and a sleeping man who was probably in his 30's or early 40's - feet up, he was the guardian who would take money 10,000 lei each (quite expensive i think) to give us TP and move the bar past the turnstile that would allow us to witness a site that most would prefer to avoid. this repugnant smell unfortunately would stay on my pumas until i could get them home and soak them in hot water and a supersonic cleaner. most WC in romania in my experience are not bad at all. i look at going to the bathroom in a public place as an opportunity to work my quads - squat and work those muscles. nici o problema but this was only a surprise to me since we were in the gara of one of the largest cities in romania. in all the other places who cares..you expect this a little more hard core but here a small surprise. so for those of you who haven't had this experience i will try to describe it....

imagine a stench of urine and cacați emenating from probably 40 holes in the ground where you can deposit your bodily waste. a group latrine with doors that don't close and really at some point you don't care because you don't want to touch anything there anyway. for guys not so bad for girls well.... so ok i'm not going to describe it any further since well... i love romania and it's not a pretty topic. chris was a saviour with her anti-bacterial travel size cleanser. so we have an hour to kill b4 boarding the train for belgrade -

so off to the cafe in the gara to drink some espresso. the cafe was filled with barbați only and one female server. many were roma i think and almost all of them were drinking some form of alcholic beverage.....

lack of sleep for me so i will continue this poveste later......

the train ride is just toooooo long so we've minimized the trip - still we will be gone for 4 days - leave tonight instead around 2230 arriving in timisoara at 500 then an hour wait and the train to belgrad arriving somewhere around 930 yikes.... so we'll have friday, saturday and most of sunday - departing sunday night and arriving in cluj monday morning around 430 sooooo monday will be recovery day. if we depart on monday then tuesday is ruined and well we both have a lot a lot a lot of work to do...so the next trip will be strictly timisoara and that will be i hope in a few weeks.

am mers 'dallas' astazi. m-am intalnit alți oamenii care lucrez pentru organizație ca ajutor alți oameni. voi sa fac un mural cu copilor acolo. sper ca fac o imagine ca vă fi ceva îl vă aduce aminte (pe ei) deci azi a fost foarte bine. am vazut mulți copii care au zambit - foarte frumos :) un sfersit cand noi vor pleca un copil frumos a spus nume lui si el dă mâna mea si a spus 'imi pare bine' .....foarte draguți.

ca si ne am plimbat spre 'dallas' - muzica a fost performați (?) masine merg în mare viteză, în timp ce, oaie pasc pe deal, cai, câini si oameni au fost împrejur. eu doar am vrut sa ma uit si ascult....foarte interesant.

aseara am mers la opera - fantasic!!!!! mozart's figaro în limba româna - soooooooo exciting since we didn't expect it - foarte frumoasa!!!!!!!! the printed program was from ianuarie 1995 and neither one of us noticed it until later - we were reading the synopsis in ro and looking at the pictures of the performers and noticed that none of them looked familiar - hehe

bineinteles azi am fost obosita :( dar inca azi a fost bun! that's right still a good day even with being tired. got a lot accomplished. sorted out my finances here to get a real hold on where i'm at with this...doing well i believe and won't have the expense of scola after june so........

maybe i'll move in november. chris will leave then and her place is much much cheaper and beautiful. perfect size for me too. 6th floor walk-up but so what else is new - i'm always living high up - her hoody is very nice too. the place i'm in just costs too much to heat - the rest is AOK but the utilities well they're killer. it would be a few thousand a year savings - plus the no more paying for school will be a few thousand a year savings too woooohoooo cause well since i live here i expect to make the equivlent salary here which doesn't compare to state $$ dar nu contează........

azi a fost foarte bine! bun!!!!! bun!!!!! bun!!!!! incredibil!!!!!! vreme a fost buna - aproape 17 c - a presupus sa plouă dar nu ploaie :) doar soarele.....apoi am primit permis de sedere si cel mai mult parte este valabil pâna la 2011 - that's right 2011 doua mie si unsprezece. deci sunt foarte fericita azi :) in plus am cumparat niste lururile pentru arta. WOW

engleza - today was excellent, incredibile! weather was very good, almost 17c - it was supposed to rain but no rain :) only sun - then i recieved my residence permit and the best part is that it's valid until 2011 - that's right - 2011 - so i'm very happy today, plus i bought some stuff for art. wow!

really it's as if now there's nothing that can hold me back....i'm official and it feels damn good. travel plans made today too for belgrade and timisoara :) can't wait...had to postpone previously since i didn't have actele ....ah relief!!!

what else - of course went to class this morning but oooopppppssss! when i woke up this morning i was puzzled cause the clocks changed actually yesterday, i was puzzled yesterday too but just thought one of my clocks stopped and the other automatically changed and well i didn't put 2+2 together so i didn't have all the time that i thought i had :) so yep i was late for scoala cause well i had to drink some java b4 i went. so after getting the ID, went for some cafea to celebrate and then art supplies - have been painting and experimenting. actually bought acrylic paint which i don't like but it's ok since i need to work with this material right now and figure it out. plus working on figuring out some ways to make the stencils for some of the designs for t's.

yesterday was studying and working like a dawg on mastering some software that isn't as sophisticated as some of the other programs i'm used to but still excellent. spent a good 2 hours studying and at least 8 hours on the software/art stuff yesterday. woooooohooooo!!!!

one of the observations that i have made here or i guess just my thoughts about this... the circus has come to cluj. they are setting up the stage/tents for the spectacol extraordinare! i think that because ro was all wrapped up in communism and still after that because of the economic status of many people and the law limiting travel out of the country that the romanians have been able to be self sufficient in their leisure time. enjoying and developing the talents of their people. this is seen in the quality of their talent in theatre productions and such.

of course people watch television too. leisure time is spent with friends in cafes, movies, opera, plays, art...festivals. there is so much going on. people travel throughout their own country and enjoy it's splendors. of course people do this in the US too. but it's so vast and different. imagine if your in the states that you would explore every splendid aspect of your wn state and get to know it so very well.

romania has geography on it's side....they have mountains, countryside, cities, beach, hot springs, caves and gardens. plus it borders 5 other countries if you want to travel out of the country.

hmmmm these thoughts were interupted by my desire to eat a banana and call my mom and my friend judy in statele unite....so i'm back and well don't know really what else to say but i must go to sleep and nurse myself back to health since m-am racit :(

so i confess i'm sick today and yesterday with a terrible grotesque respritory infection - but i've got some reliable things with me so i'm on my way to recovery....echineaca, zinc, vitamins c and assorted vits - plus awesome fresh honey, fresh grapefruit and the good old ancient reliable neti pot a/k/a the snotty potty. ewwwww - i know. but the damn thing works. a little sare si apa and ur ready to go. so i'm feeling better already but just bad enough not to do any real work - besides it's after 8 30 and it's been a long day - scoala in dimineata - wears me out then shopping with a friend and lunch and then nap-time. actually scoala really really wore me out today - of course now i'm tired but don't feel like watching the idiot tube, so i amuse myself by visiting a link that was shared by a friend on myspace....

deci viața aici este buna. ce pot sa spun? sunt 'hooked' pe KRS si o mix de KRS si alt. este fantastic! asculta de ei daca poți :) cred ca nu prea mult sa scriu azi dar sunt sa practic :) deci puțin lucruri asta ce eu voi scrie. prima odata fiecare zi nu pot ma ajute - trebuie sa beau cafea mare. incerc sa scăd zahar - zahar este tocmai un lucru sunt dedat unui viciu. deci miere este ajutor.

lucrez pe carte pentru copiii, si creat o design pentru t. de fapt sunt fericita despre asta deoarece este sa veni impreuna tot. Într-un fel timpul aici se întampla rapid. cred aici zilei sunt plin cu lucru si învăţătură. dominica voi merge la 'dallas' o roma obste. asta este un loc unde voi lucra cu copiii sa creat un mural. copiii si parinții nu vorbesc engleza :) deci experiența asta voi ajute mine mai mult.

desi ma duc la universitatea pe marți si joi - nu este demult. din nou o sa merg 'the bridge' unde o sa iau curuli pentru conversație pe luni, miercuri si veneri. dar mai puțin ore acum - 2.5 - fiecare zi. cred ca voi spune cu livius în româneste când posibile. dar probabil în engleza mult doar nu vreau sa 'torture' el. trebuie sa mănânc - mi-e foame foarte multe .....

The Dalai Lama's views on love as the foundation of human existence contain food for thought. (Sunday Times of India, June 16):

The reason why love and compassion bring the greatest happiness is simply because our nature cherishes them above all else. They result from the profound interdependence we all share with one another. However capable and skilful an individual may be, left alone, he or she will not survive. However vigorous and independent one may feel during the most prosperous periods of life, when one is sick or very young or very old, one must depend on the support of others.

Interdependence, of course, is a fundamental law of nature. Not only higher forms of life but also many of the smallest insects are social beings which, without any religion, law or education, survive by mutual co-operation based on an innate recognition of their interconnectedness. The most subtle level of material phenomena is also governed by interdependence....

We have to consider what we human beings really are....Since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. Instead, we should consider our origins and nature to discover what we require....From the least to the most important event, the affection and respect of others is vital for our happiness.

I recall meeting scientists in America who said that the rate of mental illness in their country was quite high—around 12 percent of the population. It became clear during our discussion that the main cause of depression was not lack of material necessities but deprivation of the affection of others.

I believe that no one is born free from the need for love. And this demonstrates that—although some modern schools of thought seek to do so—human beings cannot be defined as solely physical. No material object, however beautiful or valuable, can make us feel loved, because our deeper identity and true character lie in the subjective nature of the mind.

O lume in care dinozaurii vorbesc pe Net este hmmm, o lume interesanta.Nici eu nu am mai scris la nimeni... important in plan existential pana acum. Dar tu, ooooo Slippy Jenkins, tu trebuie sa fii precum petala de cires purtata pe aripile vantului in miez de primavara.

Ce aiureli sa scrii. Mai bine-i sa vezi sani, fie ei si virtuali. Problema (de fiecare data trebuie sa fie o problema) cu sanii, ca apartin de o tipa sau de alta. Nu toti sanii sunt la fel. ieri a fost o zi ocupat! prima o data am mers cu chris la piața sa cumpar fructe, legume si bineinteles salam. cred ca sunt 'addicted' salam. În special îmi place salam rustica - este foarte bun!!!! amic meu kevin stie asta si a spus 'adams no wonder u don't have a boyfriend - u probably smell from all the salami u eat!' desighur nu este intr-adevar :) dar am apreciat umor lui. pentru ca am stit el pentru mulți ani, stiu ca el este o tipa cu scaun la cap (gotta check out that phrase cu profesoara?) deci nu pot sa primesc demult!

În piata noi am cumparat capsune - yum yum yummy - si ingredienții pentru pierogies. apoi m-am adus chris la lactate heaven. vreme a fost buna ieri si noi am stat în piata mihai viateual (sp?) unde noi am relaxat pana la n-am dus la magazine pentru bluje si 'belly jewelry.' am mers tatuji si piercing magazine si lee cooper jeans. am cumparat bluje nou si o jachete pentru primavara. trebuit sa cumpar bluj deoarece alte bluje au fost istovit. este weekend ocupata si săptmână viitoare este nebuna si!

chris si eu pe luni vom avea 'zi de fete.' ne ducem la sala sport, apoi vom lua cu chirie un film si vom ne pregați pierogies. mai tarziu vom gati să mănancam si ne uitam filmul.

dupa de aseara.... am mers petrecere si m-am intalnit alți oameni din statele unite, românia si serbia. dupa petreceri (pl?) noi am mers clubul sa dansăm si ne-am intalnit alt om din serbia. am baut vodka si tonic iar dansez dar a fost foarte aglomorat. alina cine este din NY, am invațat ca ea a studiat cu angela. angela a fost profesoara limba româna mea în NY si alina stie sebastian din germania. sebastian studieaza limba romăna cu mine de la facultate de literare.

dupa clubul la ora 3 dimineața m-am plimbat acasa. sfersit m-am dormit pâna la aprope 11. acum scriu si studiez. trebuie sa iau un nap si relax.

buna dimineata :) deci cred ca scriu pentru nimeni dar pe mine. trebuie sa practic romaneste. uneori este dificil si uneori este usor. acum mi-e somn. poate în 20 minute aminte mea va se trezeste...beu cafea si mănânc niste sesame sticks. am baut prea mult vin aseara dupa noi am mers casa de cultura studentilor sa vedem vecinilor de chris canta de viola. muzicii a fost foarte frumos. programul a fost 3 compozitori rusesc. prima o data a fost o compoziție celebru. apoi nu stiu - apoi cred ca am auzit asta înainte dar nu stiu cine. dupa noi am mers roland garros si am mancat si am baut. gui din roma am venit cu noi. a fost al lui zi ultim în cluj. el va muta la brussels de la luni ultim. fumez foarte puternic țigara acum resturi de aseara - am vorbit cu chelner si am intrebat pentru 'lights' dar a fost zgomotos si s-adus camel 'regulars.' mă (sau eu- nu stiu) îmbunătăţesc îndemânare ascultând. deoarece când ea a vorbi, am inteles tot. ea a fost, cred, suprinsa. a fost bun pentru mine. noi am dat ea prea mult de un bacşiş. dar e-n regula. acum mă duc la piața pentru legume si fructa. cred ca cafeăua este 'kicking in.' seara chris si eu vom o petrecere mic aproape acasă. deci mă gandesc voi vorbi in romaneste - woooohoooo. deci atat!

acum eu stau jos pe canape in timp ce scriu - am fost inspirat sa scriu deoarece - am cautat de la stânga si am vazut umbre pe peretele. uneori lampa de la strada (nu stiu 'preps') deranjeaza mine dar în moment asta - acolo este doar frumusețse - ninje se varsă. deci cu acest eu spui noape buna!

so check it out and comment if u will. so wow my back hurts. finally posted some more recent meaning beyond 2000 works - a bunch from sketchbooks from 2004. most of the stuff though if not noted 2004 is from 2000 and inainte (before) and mucho mucho more to come...so.....

romania is treating me very well. i have friends here that are very kind to me, smart teachers, i live in a beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood. i have things that i love around me and food on my table. i have a dog without the full responsibility and i have met many interesting people. thanks universe for supporting me in my endeavor to make a life here...it's only been a short time but i cherish my moments here. even when i'm feeling fat :) i have named the extension of my winter love handles 'talie paine' pronounced tal-e-ay pwe-nay - means bread waist. the bread here is incredible. it's fresh and delicious. so i'm allowing myself to indulge the pleasures of fresh baked bread until the end of the month...then time to prepare of costum de baia - that would be a bathing suit and since i have 3 cute bikinis...although i'm indulging in paine i am working out to offset any long term effects. lots of crunches and some light weight work - now that i have some stuff to work with...looking forward to warmer weather. the weather is what it's supposed to be like in the ny metro area (know that area is expereincing an unusually warm season) in winter. cold is tiring but it makes u feel alive. just wish sometimes that it wouldn't fall below 0 grade - bunica (that's grandma) she used to say 'if wishes were horses beggars would ride' and well speaking of grannies, yesterday i had a great experience with an old woman that lives here. she had all the makings of a warm and loving bunica. went with my friend christine to romtelecom so she could order a fixed line and she had to take a number sapte zeci si opt (78) bunica was sapte zeci si doi (72) and so we sat and waited. bunica started to ask some questions of us and then engaged me in a conversation for 20 minutes all in romanian. she asked me all kinds of questions in romanian and well i answered her. she was holding my hand and looking at me while she spoke - she was really in the conversation. so it was a great expereince for me to practice my skills speaking the language and well i was happy when she told me that i spoke beautifully in romanian :) a good confidence boost for me since sometimes it's challenging. so that's it for now. need to get some rest and veg out for awhile.
